Young Leader Development Programme

A chance for young people to develop their leadership skills, take part in more adventurous sailing, and to volunteer in the community and on our boats.

 

The YLDP harnesses the enthusiasm and talent of twelve past crewmembers. It provides further hard and soft-skills training and a Challenge Voyage during which they train to become Watch Leaders.

Afterwards, they YLDP participants will work with a local community group and apply their new skills life ashore. After graduating they will support hundreds more young people in their adventures under sail as sea staff abroad OYT Scotland Vessels.

YLDP 2012 - We are now recruiting!

Stage 1- Application

Application and Selection, young people are invited to apply for their position on the 2012 YLDP. The closing date for 2012 applications is 9th January 2012. All applicants will receive a letter in January confirming if their application has been successful.

Stage 2- Planning

YLDP 2012 candidates will meet onboard Alba Venturer 15th-17th June 2012. It will be an evening join at 20.00 and 16.00 finish, exact location will be confirmed closer to the date, it is likely it will be Braehead, Glasgow or Greenock.

It will be an exciting and busy weekend as all the participants gather for the first time. During the two days participants will

• Attend a presentation delivered by YLDP 2011 participants about their voyage and have the opportunity to ask any questions.

• Participate a planning session, focusing on your fundraising targets and ideas. You will need to fundraise £500 towards your berth fees.

• Attend an information session in preparation for your Challenge Voyage in August.

• Meet key members of staff and the sea staff due to sail on your Challenge Voyage.

• Participate in teambuilding exercises

Participants are encouraged to stay in contact with other participants via facebook and emails as the programme and planning develops.

Stage 3- Sailing

The Young Leader's Challenge Voyage will take place over ten days 23/07/2012- 3/08/2012; it is likely the voyage will sail to the Faroe Islands. The voyage will be demanding and it's important that each crewmember has the essential skills such as good seamanship, the ability to work well as part of a team and the determination and motivation to succeed.

Stage 4- Training

Participants will undertake a training voyage, depending on the participant this will be Bosun or Watchleader training, undertaken in October 2012 and April 2013. Participants will be expected to obtain their Ocean Youth Trust Scotland Watchleader qualification by the end of the programme and invited to sail as volunteer sea staff with Ocean Youth Trust Scotland. Participants will also receive a training bursary towards the cost of a course of their choice at the OYT Scotland's annual training seminar in Feb 2013 and benefit from free sailing membership for the duration of the programme.

Stage 5- Leading

At this stage participants are encouraged to help target a crew for a youth voyage. With full support from the office team, they will be involved in the pre voyage planning including fundraising , sail on the youth voyage as voluntary sea staff and complete a post voyage debrief and evaluation.

Stage 6- Presentation

Together candidates will deliver a presentation to next YLDP participants, key staff members and sponsors, this will take place in spring 2013.

It depends on the participant; the program can be completed between 12- 18 months.
