Personal Kit List

Apart from an appetite for adventure, there are just a few other essentials you need to bring.

We provide you with a lifejacket, safety harness and a set of oilskins (comprising of a foul weather jacket and salopettes).

You don't need any specialist equipment to sail with OYT Scotland, just a sleeping bag, a pair of wellies and some warm clothes. Below is a list of kit we ask crew members to bring:

  • 2 Complete changes of clothes
  • Sleeping bag
  • 1 Jacket (Waterproofs are provided however a warm jacket is needed)
  • Fleeces/Jumper
  • Warm hat
  • Gloves
  • Trousers
  • Shorts
  • Underwear
  • Swimsuit
  • Warm Socks
  • Wellies (important so can keep you dry if the sea is rough)
  • Trainers
  • Towel
  • Wash kit
  • Camera (optional)

Remember, even in the summer it can be cold out on the water, especially at night.

It may be useful to bring a small bag for going ashore (rucksack or shoulder bag).

It is also important to bring any medication you may be taking. Make sure your medication is clearly labelled with your name and that you have given us details of it on your booking form.

Space on board is limited so please don't overpack! Please being your kit in soft, squashable bags or holdalls as we are unable to store suitcases or framed rucksacks.

Insurance
You may want to think about travel insurance prior to your voyage. OYT Scotland carries full public liability insurance to cover all aspects of our activities. We do however strongly recommend that you arrange your own insurance to cover booking, travel to and from the boat and personal belongings - we cannot accept liability for these aspects of your trip.

Electrical equipment
Our voyages are all about getting back to basics and we would prefer you not to bring DVD players, games consoles, or other electrical entertainment. There simply won't be time to use them and there is a good chance they my get damaged on the boat.

There is no facility on board to charge electrical items or to plug items into mains electricity. Your mobile phone is unlikely to receive a signal in many of the places we sail to.

Our voyages are all about meeting and getting to know others and this is difficult to do if have other distractions. However you are welcome to bring a personal stereo and some people (including our staff) use them to drown out any snoring when trying to get to sleep; a set of earplugs is also an option.

Mobile phones
At the start of the voyage we collect in everybody's mobile phone for safe keeping and to prevent any interference with the boat's navigation equipment and to save battery life as there are no charging facilities onboard. You will be able to use your phone during shore visits throughout the voyage. Our sailing area also covers parts of Scotland that do not have mobile phone reception and it's worth telling people at home that they may not hear from you for several days at a time (if at all). For urgent communications we are able to make shoreside contact, and parents or guardians can make contact with us at all times via our 24 hour Duty Manager.

Sea-sickness
Sea-sickness sometimes affects people during our voyages but is not something to worry about. It is not an indication of being a good sailor or not – it can happen to anyone. It should quickly once you adjust to the motion of the boat whilst out at sea. If you are worried about sea-sickness visit your pharmacist for advice - there are several remedies that are available to combat the effects of sea-sickness.

If you have any questions please contact us and a member of our staff will be more than happy to chat to you.
